Performance Biography

Dramatic soprano Debra Lynn Cotterall is a seasoned and versatile artist, widely recognized as a veteran of the Philadelphia music scene, who engages audiences throughout the region with her command of operatic repertoire, musical theater performance, and contemporary works of classical composition alike.

Upcoming engagements include a return to the musical theater stage with SALT Performing Arts PA as Nettie Fowler (cover) in Carousel in September 2026. Immediately following, Cotterall will make her role debut as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with Art City Opera as a part of the 2026 Philadelphia Fringe Festival.

Recent operatic highlights include La Badessa (Opera Magnifico) and La Maestra delle Novizie (Art City Opera) in Suor Angelica, Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro (Delaware Valley Opera Company), First Lady in Die Zauberflöte (LAHSOW Opera Workshop). She is also a frequent soloist with Opera by the Sea in Bradley Beach, New Jersey.

A committed interpreter of new music, Cotterall has been featured in several regional premieres. Most recently, she performed the title role in Melissa Dunphy’s Alice Tierney at the 2025 Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and appeared as Susan in the Philadelphia premiere of Peter Hilliard’s The Filthy Habit in 2024. Her theatrical versatility extends beyond opera to the musical stage, with performances including Les Misérables in concert at Plays and Players Theatre in Philadelphia, a cabaret soloist appearance at The Theatre Next Door in 2025, Shirley in The Producers at The Players Club of Swarthmore, and Yente in Fiddler on the Roof for Rowan University’s inaugural collaboration between its music and theater departments.

In addition to her performing career, Cotterall is a passionate and dedicated church musician, having served as a cantor and staff musician for over 15 years at parishes throughout Delaware County, including Saint Francis of Assisi in Springfield and Saint Anastasia in Newtown Square.

A graduate of the Frank Tenaglia Opera Fellowship under the direction of John Tenaglia, Cotterall earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Rowan University, where she studied with Bonita Granite. She continues her vocal studies with Elizabeth Blanke-Biggs and Maestro Michael Recchuitti.

Equally distinguished as an educator, Cotterall is a respected music teacher and vocal coach whose work has impacted hundreds of students across the Delaware Valley. She serves on the music faculty at Saint Francis of Assisi School in Springfield, Pennsylvania, where she teaches students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Known for her expertise in working with youth, particularly within the Philadelphia School District, her students have earned vocal scholarships to institutions such as Cardinal O’Hara High School and The Academy of Notre Dame, and frequently perform leading roles in both academic and professional settings, including Bonner-Prendergast High School, Archbishop Carroll High School, CCC Shines, and The Media Theatre.

Cotterall also brings a strong background in music therapy to her work. She holds a Master’s degree in Creative Arts Therapy from Drexel University and has been a board-certified music therapist for over a decade. Her clinical experience includes work with COMHAR, Friends Hospital, Peaceful Living, The Kardon Institute for Arts Therapy, BuildaBridge International, the Philadelphia Intermediate Unit, and the School District of Philadelphia. She has been a lead music therapist with the Upper Darby Arts and Education Foundation since the launch of its special education initiative, the Butterfly Buddy Camp and Club. She currently serves as Assistant Vocal Director and Vocal Coach for CCC Shines, where she continues to mentor and inspire young performers throughout the region.
